Designing the maternity leave journey

Questtonó, an innovation and design agency, brought us the challenge of rethinking the maternity leave journey for its employees. The goal was to create solutions that would strengthen the connection between the company and employees throughout the entire journey—from family planning, pregnancy, and post-birth to returning to work.

The challenge was to ensure that the maternity leave program was positive for both the company and the employees, considering their distinct needs during this period of transition and transformation.

From We vs Them to We & Them

I facilitated a real-time strategy workshop using the Lego® Serious Play® methodology, which enabled to create a creative and collaborative environment where Questtonó’s leadership and teams could reflect and design, with their own hands, solutions for a maternity leave program that worked for everyone.

The focus was on creating a structure that would support women during the phases of family planning, pregnancy, post-birth, and returning to work, while also strengthening the connections between the company and its employees, fostering a sense of trust and collaboration.

During the workshop, we led discussions that explored questions such as:
• How can we create solutions that strengthen the connections between the company and its people throughout the maternity journey?
• How can we build tools and support structures that benefit both the company and its employees during the entire maternity leave period?
• How do we create a program that considers and connects the needs of both parties?
• How can we help women rediscover their identity and purpose when returning to work, fostering a positive reconnection with the company?

Outputs

Through a real-time strategy workshop using Lego® Serious Play® methodology, we facilitated the co-creation of a comprehensive maternity leave program that addressed both company and employee needs, focusing on strengthening connections and support throughout the maternity journey.

The key outputs included:

- Strengthening connections: Solutions that reinforced the relationship between the company and its employees during the maternity journey.
- Support structures and tools: Development of tools and structures to assist both the company and employees during the entire maternity period (planning, pregnancy, post-birth, and return to work).
- Mutual needs: A maternity leave program that considered and aligned the needs of both the company and the women involved.
Reconnection and empowerment: Strategies to help women reconnect with their identity and purpose, fostering a positive return to work experience.
